JLM GDI Injector Cleaner

The JLM GDI Injector Cleaner has specifically been developed for the latest generation of GDi engines. The JLM GDI Injector Cleaner not only cleans existing injector deposits, it also stops the build-up of future deposits, so complex injection systems always operate at maximum efficiency. In demanding, new industry engine tests, the JLM GDI Injector Cleaner delivers exceptional best-in-class performance.

The JLM GDI Injector Cleaner
Engine technology does not stand still, so why should fuel additives? With Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) posing new challenges to workshops, JLM Lubricants has risen to the challenge to support garages and car owners with its latest fuel additive, formulated solely to address GDI fuel injector problems.

The problem with GDI
While GDI engines boast impressive performance, efficiency and CO2 figures when the car is new, the benefits do not last forever. Tighter tolerances of the mechanical parts and higher soot/particulate production make GDI engines highly sensitive to contamination as they age, which has far reaching implications for real-world efficiency. The first issue that many owners report is either an illuminated engine management light, reduced power, or excessive exhaust emissions that result in a roadworthiness inspection failure.

Cleaning-up the GDI mess
Rectifying the root-cause is not straightforward. As the fuel injectors are exposed to not only heat but also the by-products of the combustion process, contaminations become baked onto the injector tip, blocking its fine holes (possessing smaller diameters than that of a human hair) and altering the spray pattern. Sophisticated engine management will compensate for this injector fouling by adjusting the fuelling automatically but only to a point. When the long term fuel trim deviates beyond a typical 25% from its standard setting, the engine warning lamp is likely to illuminate, accompanied by the reduced power 'limp home' mode. The challenge is not only to address the symptoms and effect a cure but also curtail future build-up. JLM Lubricants has risen to the challenge and developed its own GDI fuel additive that performs all of these tasks.

Laboratory tests at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, England, during 2019 proved that JLM's GDI Injector Cleaner's gives faster and more complete clean-up performance, compared to other detergent technologies that tend not to focus on the contamination issues that GDI technology causes. The active ingredients were shown to not only remove and inhibit fuel injector contamination but also fuel consumption decreased by just over 4% during the tests. Particulate emissions reduced, too, highlighting the environmental benefit of using the cleaner regularly as a preventative measure.

The whole direct injection cleaning picture
We are confident that our GDI Injector cleaner is the finest on the market but we admit that it cannot resolve all contamination issues in modern engines.

Deposits that restrict low tension piston ring movement are best addressed with JLM's Engine Oil Flush at every service, to restore the resultant lost compression. While more complete combustion has the additional benefit of reducing inlet deposits, JLM's GDI Injector Cleaner cannot clean clogged intake manifolds, EGR valves and cylinder head ports. For this, JLM recommends its Air Intake Cleaner both as a cleaner and a preventative measure at service time.

With its new GDI petrol injector cleaner joining forces with its existing Engine Oil Flush and Air Intake Cleaner products, JLM Lubricants allows workshops to offer the complete GDI decontamination cure to benefit the motorist, their cars and, of course, the environment.

Product information

Today’s gasoline direct injection (GDi) engines offer improved fuel economy and lower emissions. That’s why more engine and vehicle manufacturers are switching to GDI technology to ensure compliance with ever-lower emissions targets and the driving expectations of their customers. But these high pressure & high performance engines operate to very tight tolerances. Experience tells us such precision components need protecting if the engine is to perform exactly as intended.

Conventional injector cleaners have been created and tested for indirect injected or the so called Port Fuel Injected (PFI) engines and the problems of intake valve deposits (IVD). These chemistries are not developed for deposit control in modern GDI engine technology and will not provide optimum engine protection. Therefore we have developed the JLM GDI Injector Cleaner. Since inception, GDI engines have had known problems with coking—build-up of cooked fuel deposits that foul injectors.

The GDI problems are mainly caused by the higher cylinder temperatures and pressures released into the crankcase which accelerate oil vaporization. Eventually this causes oil droplets to coat the intake valves and injectors. The location and angle of the fuel injectors in GDI systems mean that fresh fuel is not sprayed onto intake valves, so it doesn’t “clean” or cool them by preventing vapour build-up. As a result, this build-up can accumulate and bake onto intake valves and injectors in as little as 16,000 km (10,000 miles).

E10 Fuels
In short, it’s a real problem and is further exacerbated by modern fuels with up to 10 percent ethanol. The initial problem is indicated by poor performance and knocking. Using a fuel without optimized GDI additive technology is likely to lead to fouled injectors and compromised critical engine efficiency. Engine performance drops, fuel economy falters and emissions rise.

With JLM’s novel and cutting-edge fuel additive technology, engine performance is reliably maintained over the whole life of the vehicle. By removing deposits and keeping the injector system clean, the engine will continue to perform as expected.
